You are probably here because you have never urban fished in Fort Worth before and you want to know what to bring. The good news is that we personally went and talked to an expert at Cabela’s to find out everything you need to get and how much it costs! We are excited to have you come out and try out urban fishing at our trout stocking event.
TRWD’s Trout Stocking Fishing Kit:
Size 8 Hook
Power Bait (Ball)
Power Bait (Trout Worm)
Rooster Tail 1/16 oz.
|4 lb. or 6lb. Fishing line
Stringer or Basket
Each item on this list is specifically picked out to attract Rainbow Trout.
The technique to use when fishing is toss your line in, let it drift down river a little, and then slowly reel it in to get a bite!
Rainbow Trout are not heavy fish so, it is not necessary to have a long pole, however, you want a pole that has enough flexibility to handle when the fish jump once hooked. For the fishing kit we recommend a five foot Ugly Stik pole and fishing line that is four-pound or six-pound line. Cabela’s will spool your reel for free.
The next thing you need is a ¼ oz. split shot; weighing down the line is not important since trout search for food near the top of the water.
For the hook, you need a size 8 hook since trout have good vision a big hook will scare them off. We also recommend getting a lighter line because the higher the pound test line number the thicker and more visible it is to the trout in the water.
For baiting your hook we suggest bait with bright colors so, aim for colors like bright orange, red, pink or yellow. You have the option to do one Powerbait ball and one Powerbait worm, or two Powerbait balls, do not use matching colors.
You will also pair this with a 1/16 oz. rooster tail to add to the attraction effect.
After catching your fish, the best thing to do is to keep them fresh. You will need pliers to remove the hook from their mouth. Then you will need a stringer; this is where you take the fish and put the rope through their mouth and out through their gills. The alternative is place them in a floating basket. Be sure to tether stinger or basket to the bank.
What do you do with our fish once you are done? Do not put your live fish in a cooler of water, they will get slimy and gross. The best method is to bring a cooler full of ice and place the fish inside to keep them fresh. Recommended cooler size is 35 quarts to 45 quarts cooler.
The last piece of advice we’ll give you is to bring your family with you! The trout stockings are for everyone and can help you prepare for Flyfest in Fort Worth on March 9! This festival is more than just fishing there’s also rock climbing, wine tasting, live music, and a demonstration on how to cook the fish you caught!
